Rare Deinotherium Tooth
A rare find from Bosnia, this Deinotherium giganteum tooth retains a portion of its root and displays rich, natural coloring throughout.
Deinotherium was a prehistoric elephant-like mammal that lived from the Miocene to the early Pleistocene epochs. Recognizable by its large, downward-curving tusks attached to the lower jaw, Deinotherium was one of the largest land mammals of its time, reaching up to 14 feet (4.3 meters) at the shoulder. Unlike modern elephants, its tusks pointed backward rather than forward, and it had a shorter trunk. These ancient giants inhabited parts of Africa, Asia, and Europe, thriving in open woodlands and forests where they likely fed on leaves, fruits, and soft vegetation. Fossils of Deinotherium provide valuable insight into the evolution and diversity of prehistoric proboscideans.
